Meet the Board – Dr Shabnam Zai

The Female Dentist is overseen by a board of experienced dental professionals and business leaders, each able to share their unique professional journey as well as the tips and tricks that can elevate your career.

Dr Shabnam Zai is a Board Member of The Female Dentist, bringing over 20 years of experience as a dentist. As one of the Clinical Directors and co-founders of West House Dental, London, Dr Zai is able to support women in dentistry across a range of areas. She explains why The Female Dentist appealed to her:

“I joined The Female Dentist board because I deeply believe in the power of community, mentorship, and visibility for women in dentistry. Throughout my journey – from working in both NHS and private settings, to nearly a decade on Wimpole Street, to eventually setting up my own private squat practice in London – I’ve seen first-hand how overwhelming, and yet incredibly rewarding this profession can be. I wish I’d had access to a network like this earlier in my career; somewhere I could find not only guidance, but also honest conversations, shared experiences, and meaningful encouragement from a female perspective. Being part of this board is my way of helping create that space for others.

“Broadly, The Female Dentist network offers exactly what the name suggests: a supportive, inspiring space for women in the profession to grow, connect, and thrive. Whether you’re a student, an associate, a dental nurse, a dental hygienist/therapist or a seasoned practice owner, this network offers access to mentorship, shared resources, expert insights, and real conversations about the challenges unique to women in dentistry. It’s a place to ask questions, gain confidence, and, most importantly, feel seen and understood. There’s something powerful about learning from those who’ve walked the same path – and knowing you don’t have to do it all alone.

“In my own work, I focus a lot on coaching dentists, especially those interested in practice ownership or looking to feel more in control and fulfilled at work. I run courses on setting up your own squat practice from a woman’s perspective, and I host a podcast called ‘Filling the Gap’, where I share all the practical tips and expert advice I wish I had before I took the leap into ownership. I also support dentists in building healthier, happier careers through mindset shifts, leadership skills, and clarity on what success looks like for them.

“I believe deeply in delivering ethical dentistry and putting patients first, leading with compassion, and running practices that reflect integrity and purpose. I help women navigate big decisions around leadership, practice ownership, and work-life balance, especially those juggling motherhood or personal challenges alongside a demanding clinical career. I know what it’s like to want more autonomy and joy in your career, and my goal is to help other women achieve that on their own terms.

“As for the legacy The Female Dentist network will leave behind, I hope we inspire a wave of confident, ethical, and empowered female dental professionals who not only succeed, but lift others as they rise. I hope we normalise conversations about boundaries, burnout, and ambition. And I hope we build a strong foundation for the next generation of female dental professionals to feel bold, brave, and backed.

“I’m honoured to be part of this movement and excited about what’s ahead. Together, we’re not just creating better dentists and dental professionals – we’re building better leaders, happier teams, and a stronger, more supportive profession.”
